A Few Common Myths with Regard to B.tox Procedures

Posted on Wednesday 19 August 2009

Sydney Botulinum medicine (B.tox for short) is rapidly becoming established amongst Sydney’s stylish set in fact it is becoming a beauty routine essential for people in the Harbour City. Nevertheless I am often dumbfounded when I hear the various half truths that surround this procedure. Here are a few of the more myths which I encounter everyday in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a doctor.

Misunderstanding # 1: I may not be able to express myself normally!

There are about sixty muscles under the skin of your face. They usually operate harmoniously, but over a period of time fine lines can begin to appear. The overuse of Botulinum Toxin have the effect of the muscles of the face appearing over relaxed. The amount injected by virtually all doctors result in you seeming refreshed, however you will still be just as expressive.

So by injecting conservative quantities of the preparation in just the right tissues facial expression is maintained whilst any fine lines and wrinkles undergo a softening effect.

Misunderstanding # 2: Botulinum is a toxin!
This to some extent is true. Its pharmaceutical term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too great a quantity can loosen muscles that you do not want relaxed and may make you very sick.

But to put matters into perspective – a famous pharmacist’s expression is that ‘everything is a poison – all depending on the dose’. All medications can make anyone really unwell in large dosages. If you drink too great a quantity of water you will die.

Misunderstanding # 3: B.tox will sting!
Your hairs are larger than the hypodermic needles we have at Star Cosmetic Medicine. Quite a few individuals say that the shots aren’t as painful as getting bit by a mosquito. It certainly is less sore than something like a blood test.

Misunderstanding # 4: I will lose feeling in my face!
Totally false. B.tox targets the neuromuscular junction, not sensate nerve fibers. Only the ability to relax your muscles is impacted by B.tox injections.

Misunderstanding # 5. Once you begin getting B.tox you must keep getting it otherwise you will get even worse fine lines and wrinkles than earlier!
Also incorrect.

The first set of injections is effective for approximately three months. Subsequent treatments do last a little longer. The wrinkles will eventually reform as the muscle regains its normal function. But they will certainly be no more noticeable than before.

Even should you never have B.tox injections again – any wrinkles will probably be a little less pronounced than if you had never been treated. This is obviously so because your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ when the B.tox was active.
