Are You Drawing Dead?

Posted on Thursday 14 May 2009

One of the major problems with the modern poker online culture is that the game has become over complicated. There are millions of books out there that give you formulas for calculating pot odds, implied odds, pretty much the odds for anything you could ever think of. New players read these guides and get so bogged down in the math that they forget the basics, like not drawing dead. I’ve seen this mistake over and over at the tables and a the casino online tables, and I can only assume that beginners make it because they still have good implied odds according to their formulas. Sure they have good odds, but the guy next to them has better odds.

Drawing dead is when you are pulling for a online poker hand that will not win because someone else at the table has a better hand. It’s like pulling for a full house when another player has a royal flush. Basically drawing dead is just an exercise in futility that wastes valuable money and time. Why would you want to put yourself through that? The best thing to do is to put down the manuals once in a while and actually pay attention to the game. Don’t get caught drawing dead, it is a rookie mistake that can easily be avoided.
