Business and Eco-Efficiency — Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. And the Environmental Defense Fund

Posted on Wednesday 28 October 2009

Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) was set up by Henry Kravis and his business partner George Roberts in the mid seventies with some support from the First Chicago Corporation. Recently they have put together a remarkable green enterprise that centers not just on how much money they can net, but likewise on how ecologically friendly each of their companies are.

When Henry Kravis from KKR and the non-profit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) merged last year green issues suddenly became a mainstream idea. These companies was forged to oppose a number of primary green matters, such as hazardous chemical use, resource depletion, extreme consumption of water resources, and hazardous chemicals. To achieve this, they apply eco-efficiency; this calls for concepts such as maximum use of renewable resources, using clean energy, and optimizing data centers for efficiency. Although the project was an enormous success, managment simply didn’t recognize how far reaching the consequences actually were until Ken Mehlman, the man responsible for the Green Portfolio Project, reviewed the first year’s profits.

Beating everyone’s expectations, Ken saw that eco-efficiency not only cut down on the impact on the planet, but also increased the profits from all their business organizations too. Nearly all of the commercial organizations connected with KKR and Ken Mehlman nowadays are participating in eco-efficiency. Considering that the portfolio is worth nearly one hundred billion USD, you can see what an achievement this actually was.

KKR in association with Ken Mehlman are extending the original Green Portfolio project. The Climate Corps Program set up by the EDF is just one of these, it raises awareness of cost-effective, planet friendly principles to MBA interns.

In recent months, Ken Mehlman has worked closely with Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co to produce analytic tools and other related systems which business concerns can employ to quantify resources. These metrics allow staff to track their progress and discover any underlying problems.

The business world has been entirely revolutionized by the pioneering work of Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund. So, to summarize, the work of these organizations has made environmentally friendly business practice not only viable, but commercially desirable, and their revolutionary ideas are setting a new standard in today’s business world.
